Question & Answer

Should I take photos on JPEG or RAW

Like many questions in photography, the answer ddepends a lot on what your situation is. Shooting in JPEG is totally fine if you are just going to use the photos for yourself or for social media. JPEG images are compressed files and have been "edited" by your camera to look nice - making it faster to upload to social media or share with your freinds. However, when the files are compressed, it comes at a cost. Quite a bit of information, especially details in highlights and shadows is lost. This unfortunately cannot be recovered. When you take photos in RAW, you are actually saving a file of information, not a photo. This larger file size contain significanrly more information that can be edited in much more detail later. The RAW files also contain metadata specific to the image. If you think you might want to edit any photo or there is a chance you could potentially take an image you want to print, publish or enter in a competition, you shoudl definitely shoot in RAW. It does take up more room on your cards and computer. Some people will shoot in both JPEG and RAW to allow them to do both. This does however slow down the camera to an extent.
